The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed multiple high-capacity pumping machines to drain water around an aircraft crash site in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as recovery teams intensify efforts to retrieve the main wreckage reportedly buried deep in the riverbed.

The operation, which involves difficult terrain and challenging underwater conditions, is aimed at creating safer access for recovery personnel and facilitating the retrieval of aircraft components from the submerged crash site.

According to a statement attributed to the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the deployment of pumping equipment forms part of ongoing efforts to overcome the technical and environmental obstacles affecting the recovery exercise.

The Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal M. C. Ekwueme, visited the affected community, where he met with traditional leaders and residents to address concerns about the potential impact of the operation on their water supply.

During the engagement, Ekwueme acknowledged the community’s concerns and assured residents that the Air Force would continue working with relevant stakeholders to address the issues arising from the recovery activities.

He expressed appreciation for the patience, understanding and cooperation demonstrated by community members despite the disruption and uncertainty surrounding the operation.

Following the meeting, the senior Air Force officer proceeded to the recovery site, where personnel briefed him on the progress recorded, operational challenges and additional measures required to retrieve the submerged wreckage.

The NAF explained that the exercise requires sustained technical support, specialised equipment and close coordination among recovery teams to ensure that operations are carried out safely and effectively.

The service also acknowledged the emotional difficulties confronting families affected by the crash, assuring them that the recovery effort remains a priority.

It emphasised that personnel involved in the operation have been directed to prioritise their safety while maintaining respect for the dignity of the victims throughout the exercise.

Beyond the recovery activities, the Chief of the Air Staff reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to providing welfare assistance to the bereaved families.

According to the statement, eligible beneficiaries will receive applicable entitlements and approved support packages, including benevolent funds, educational scholarships for qualifying children and other welfare benefits under existing service arrangements.

The Air Force stressed that its responsibility towards the affected families extends beyond the physical recovery of the aircraft, adding that compassionate and sustained support remains an important part of its response.

To strengthen communication, the service disclosed that it was maintaining contact with the bereaved families and had established a dedicated helpline at its headquarters to provide reliable information and respond to enquiries.

Addressing environmental concerns in Igbokoda, the NAF assured residents that it would continue engaging the community and relevant authorities to resolve issues associated with the recovery operation.

The service commended community leaders, residents, recovery personnel and collaborating agencies for their support and cooperation.

It reaffirmed its determination to continue the operation until further progress is achieved, promising to communicate significant developments through verified official channels.
