American artificial intelligence company Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, reportedly recorded a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, raising concerns about the financial sustainability of massive investments in artificial intelligence.

The figures, contained in a draft prospectus prepared ahead of the company’s planned initial public offering (IPO), were disclosed in a report published on Tuesday, October 20.

According to the financial documents, Anthropic’s net loss increased sharply to approximately $13 billion during the corresponding period in 2025.

However, about $72 billion of the reported loss resulted from accounting adjustments linked to changes in the estimated value of convertible notes and other financial instruments issued to raise capital.

These adjustments largely represent non-cash accounting charges rather than money directly spent on the company’s daily operations.

The financial disclosure also revealed significant revenue growth, with Anthropic generating approximately $16.3 billion in the six months ending June 30, 2026, compared with $1.1 billion during the same period last year.

Despite the increase, the company continues to face substantial expenditure associated with developing and operating advanced artificial intelligence systems.

Spending on computing infrastructure reportedly rose to nearly $9 billion during the period, almost four times the previous year’s level.

The rising costs reflect increasing demand for specialised computer chips, cloud services and data centres required to train and operate sophisticated AI models.

Anthropic also indicated that its future commitments to computing infrastructure could reach $750 billion, including potential agreements still under consideration.

The disclosure comes as the company prepares for a possible stock market listing in November.

Some investors are reportedly reassessing Anthropic’s valuation, with discussions pointing towards approximately $1.5 trillion, compared with earlier expectations of around $2 trillion.

The company’s Claude AI assistant and Claude Code programming tool have contributed to its rapid commercial expansion, attracting businesses and developers seeking advanced artificial intelligence services.

However, the draft prospectus also identified potential risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems, including cybersecurity threats, misuse of technology and difficulties maintaining adequate control over autonomous models.

The company faces the challenge of balancing rapid technological development with rising infrastructure expenses and concerns about long-term profitability.

Anthropic’s financial position also reflects broader questions facing the artificial intelligence industry as technology companies commit hundreds of billions of dollars to computing infrastructure.

Investors are increasingly examining whether growing demand for artificial intelligence products can generate sufficient revenue to justify the scale of these investments.

As of publication, Anthropic had not publicly confirmed all the financial details contained in the reported draft prospectus.

The figures remain subject to potential revision before the company’s proposed public listing.
