Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed sadness over the death of the National Leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, describing his passing as a major loss to Nigeria.

Fasoranti died on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the age of 100.

In a condolence statement issued on Wednesday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio described the late elder statesman as a patriot whose contributions to democracy, public service and national development would remain significant.

The Senate President said Fasoranti belonged to a generation of Nigerian leaders whose commitment to public service, political principles and the common good helped shape the country’s democratic development.

According to Akpabio, the late Afenifere leader distinguished himself through his dedication to justice, democratic governance and the promotion of national unity.

He maintained that Fasoranti’s influence extended beyond ethnic and political boundaries, making him a respected voice on national issues.

The Senate President noted that the elder statesman’s long life demonstrated the importance of integrity, courage, principled leadership and commitment to public responsibility.

He said Fasoranti’s legacy offered valuable lessons to present and future generations of Nigerian leaders, particularly on the need to place public interest above personal ambition.

Akpabio further emphasised that meaningful leadership should be measured not only by political positions occupied but also by the values individuals uphold and their contributions to society.

He extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the leadership and members of Afenifere, the people of Akure, the Ondo State Government and the wider Yoruba community.

The Senate President urged the bereaved family to take comfort in the elder statesman’s century-long life and the contributions he made to Nigeria’s political and social development.

He also prayed for strength for the family and peaceful rest for the deceased.

Born on May 11, 1926, Fasoranti was an educationist, politician and pro-democracy advocate who served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State.

He was closely associated with the political philosophy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and remained an influential figure in Yoruba socio-political affairs.

His death has attracted tributes from prominent Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and several state governors.

Akpabio expressed hope that Fasoranti’s memory would continue to inspire Nigerians to uphold democratic values and work towards a more united and prosperous nation.
