Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, have repelled an attempted attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Magumeri, Borno State, killing several insurgents and recovering arms and ammunition.

The military disclosed that the attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, May 6, 2026, when the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the base under the cover of poor visibility.
According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the terrorists succeeded in making minor breaches in an isolated section of the camp before troops responded decisively and overwhelmed the attackers.
“The troops fought gallantly and decisively contained and defeated the attack by neutralising scores of the terrorists,” the statement said.
The military added that follow-up exploitation operations conducted in the area revealed extensive blood trails, dragged bodies and the recovery of terrorist corpses, indicating heavy casualties inflicted on the insurgents during the failed assault.
Troops also recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition abandoned by the fleeing terrorists, including PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, AK-47 rifles and magazines.
However, the military confirmed that two soldiers were killed during the confrontation, while an officer and other wounded personnel are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
It also noted that some equipment and temporary structures within the base were damaged by fire during the intense exchange of gunfire.
Operation HADIN KAI said troops are continuing exploitation operations in the general area to consolidate on the gains recorded during the encounter, while further battle damage assessments are ongoing.
The military high command commended the troops for their performance and urged them to sustain the operational momentum against terrorist groups operating in the North-East theatre.
Magumeri Local Government Area, located in northern Borno State, has remained one of the flashpoints of insurgent activities in the region despite sustained military offensives against terrorist groups.
