…Urges AKSG to provide standard science labs in public schools

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has confirmed the appointment of five commissioners of the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC).

Those confirmed are; Engr. Ubong Etukudoh (Engineering), Dr Valerie Okon Obot (Finance and Corporate Services), Mr Paul Okon (Economic Regulation), Dr Kalu Ukoha (Policy, Planning, and Innovation), and Ms Arit Okon-Uya (Stakeholder Engagement and Consumer Affairs).

The confirmation announced by the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, followed the consideration and adoption of a report by the House Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and Public Petitions, presented by its Chairman, Hon. Aniefiok Attah (Nsit Atai state constituency), during plenary held at the old assembly chamber along Wellington Bassey Way end, Uyo, on Tuesday.

Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob, the House Leader, moved the motion for the confirmation of the five nominees which was seconded by the Deputy Leader, Hon. Nsidibe Akata.

Governor Umo Eno forwarded the names of the five AKSERC commissioner-nominees to the House of Assembly for confirmation on Thursday, April 16, 2026.

It was the first list of commissioner-nominees sent to the House of Assembly by Governor Umo Eno since the House passed the state’s electricity bill in 2024.

Following the screening of nominees during plenary, lawmakers commended Governor Umo Eno for assembling a team of experts dedicated to addressing the state’s electricity challenges.

Speaking, Hon. Udobia Friday Udo (Esit Eket/Ibeno state constituency) emphasised that if Nigeria consistently adheres to due process in securing necessary resources, the situation for its citizens would improve significantly.

Additionally, the House at Tuesday’s plenary, resolved that the State Government should proceed with the construction of perimeter fencing around public secondary schools to reduce criminal activity.

It also called for the ongoing development of science laboratories in these schools, ensuring they meet modern standards, while the involvement of Ibom Community Watch and other security agencies was recommended to help prevent ongoing vandalism.

The resolutions followed the adoption of a report by the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Onofiok Kenim. She noted that her Committee held discussions with the Commissioner for Education, the Permanent Secretary of the State Secondary Education Board (SSEB), and other stakeholders in the secondary education sector.

During its business session on Thursday, March 5, 2026, the House received a motion highlighting the urgent need to equip and standardise science laboratories in public secondary schools across Akwa Ibom State.

In response, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder ) Udeme Otong, announced the confirmation and resolutions, and directed the Clerk of the Assembly, Mrs NsikakAbasi Orok, to communicate the House’s decisions to the governor for implementation.

Meanwhile, plenary has been adjourned to reconvene on Tuesday, 2nd June 2026 at 12 noon.
