The vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has revealed that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing Obi to serve only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso disclosed during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday while responding to questions about Obi’s repeated pledge to spend only one term in office.
He expressed confidence that Obi would honour the commitment, saying he had no reason to believe the former Anambra State governor would renege on the agreement.
“I personally believe him, and I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, he will go back on his word. I don’t think he will change his mind when the time comes,” Kwankwaso said.
According to him, the understanding between both leaders extends beyond verbal assurances, as it has been formally documented.
“We are all gentlemen, but beyond that, we have decided to put it in writing. We have one agreement for the party and another specifically between us,” he stated.
Explaining the content of the agreement, Kwankwaso said it provides for power to return to northern Nigeria after Obi completes a single four-year tenure.
“The agreement is exactly as you described. After four years, from 2027 to 2031, we will come together as a party, as friends and brothers, and work collectively to ensure that power returns to the North. That is the general understanding,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi has consistently maintained that Nigeria’s pressing challenges can be addressed within a single term, insisting that four years would be sufficient to implement his proposed reforms and set the country on a path to sustainable development.
