The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation in the diaspora, the World Igbo Congress (WIC), has urged Nigerians to actively participate in the 2027 general elections by registering and voting for candidates of their choice.

The call was contained in a statement issued after the organisation’s quarterly Board of Directors meeting and jointly signed by its Chairman, Festus Okere, and Secretary-General, Chris Ogara.

According to the group, voter participation remains both a civic responsibility and a moral obligation for citizens seeking better governance and national development.

“If you have not yet registered to vote, please do so as soon as possible to avoid missing the stated deadlines,” the statement read.

The organisation stressed that political apathy only worsens the country’s challenges, insisting that citizens can only make their voices count through active participation in the electoral process.

“Your vote certainly makes a decisive difference in fighting inequality, ethnic injustice, terrorism, poverty, and other problems,” the group stated.

WIC urged Nigerians to elect leaders who would formulate people-oriented policies and remain accountable to the electorate.

“Register to vote for those who will fearlessly make the best public policies for all. Relaunch yourselves into relevance,” the statement added.

The organisation further advised citizens to reduce post-election grievances by exercising their voting rights during the polls.

“Register to vote to minimise your complaints after the elections of 2027. Actions must speak louder than voices this time around,” it said.

Highlighting the importance of democratic participation, WIC noted that voting remains the most direct means of influencing laws, policies and leadership decisions that affect the daily lives of Nigerians.

“Voting is the most direct way to influence laws, policies, and leaders who affect your daily life; political, economic, and social welfare for you, your family, community, state, and country,” the statement noted.

The group also maintained that broader participation in elections would help produce a fairer and more stable government while reducing the influence of narrow interests in governance.

“Broader participation produces fairer, more stable government and reduces the influence of narrow special interests. Registration and voting are effortless steps that give you real influence for relatively little effort,” WIC added.
