The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has assured supporters in Nasarawa State that his administration would pursue major reforms in governance, security, education and electricity if elected president in 2027.

Obi made the declaration during a town hall meeting held on Wednesday in Akwanga Local Government Area, where he outlined his plans for addressing Nigeria’s economic and institutional challenges.

The former Anambra State governor said his administration would prioritise accountability, strengthen public institutions and ensure that government policies deliver improvements in citizens’ living conditions.

He pledged to declare emergencies in critical sectors, including security, education and electricity, arguing that urgent intervention was necessary to address longstanding problems affecting national development.

Obi also promised to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system and introduce tougher measures against electoral malpractice.

Responding to concerns about possible manipulation of the 2027 elections, he warned that his party would resist attempts to undermine the electoral process.

The NDC candidate further pledged that electoral officials and political actors found guilty of manipulating elections would face legal consequences under his administration.

He maintained that strengthening democratic institutions and enforcing existing laws would be central to restoring public confidence in elections.

Obi also called for stricter verification of educational qualifications presented by candidates seeking elective offices, warning against certificate forgery and fraudulent declarations.

On economic management, he questioned the Federal Government’s handling of resources generated following the removal of petrol subsidies, calling for greater transparency and accountability.

The former governor also criticised the frequency of President Bola Tinubu’s foreign trips, arguing that government priorities should focus on addressing domestic challenges.

He reiterated his commitment to improving access to quality education, expanding electricity supply and creating opportunities for young Nigerians.

Obi further promised an inclusive administration that would provide opportunities for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups to participate in national development.

The NDC presidential candidate urged supporters to remain committed to peaceful political participation and the protection of their votes during the forthcoming elections.

Earlier, the Nasarawa State Chairman of the NDC, Dogo Shammah, welcomed Obi and other party leaders, describing the gathering as an opportunity to engage residents on the party’s programmes.

The meeting formed part of the opposition party’s nationwide consultations and mobilisation activities ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi’s proposals remain campaign commitments, with their implementation dependent on the outcome of the election and subsequent government decisions.
