Kyle Francis Kennedy, an American educator, disability rights advocate and granddaughter of the late United States Senator Robert F. Kennedy, has died at the age of 42.

Kennedy died peacefully on September 21, 2026, at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, according to an obituary published by Burke Funeral Homes. Her cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Born on July 6, 1984, in Washington, DC, Kennedy was the daughter of Michael LeMoyne Kennedy and Victoria Denise Gifford.

Her father, the sixth child of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, died in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado, on December 31, 1997, at the age of 39.

Kennedy devoted much of her professional life to early childhood education and improving educational opportunities for disadvantaged children.

She studied history at Georgetown University before obtaining a master’s degree in early education from Pace University and another in education policy and management from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.

She began her teaching career through Teach For America, working in New York City’s public school system before becoming involved in educational reform, curriculum development and support for teachers.

In 2020, Kennedy suffered a severe spinal cord injury that resulted in long-term paralysis and other medical complications.

Despite the challenges, she continued advocating for people living with disabilities, particularly those experiencing discrimination in healthcare.

She also testified before the Massachusetts State House during a hearing addressing unequal healthcare treatment for people with disabilities.

Her family remembered her for her intelligence, humour, determination and dedication to her children.

Before her injury, Kennedy was an enthusiastic athlete who enjoyed outdoor activities and long-distance running.

In 2019, she completed the Boston Marathon, reportedly finishing approximately 20 minutes faster than her father’s previous marathon time.

Kennedy married Liam Kerr in 2012, and the couple had three children, including twins Conor and Josephine. Josephine died shortly after birth.

She is survived by her sons, Conor, 12, and Declan, 10; her former husband, Liam Kerr; her mother, Victoria Denise Gifford; her brother, Michael LeMoyne Kennedy Jr.; and her sister, Rory Gifford Kennedy.

Her funeral service was held privately.

Kennedy’s death marks another loss for the prominent American political family, whose members have remained active in public service, education and humanitarian advocacy across generations.
