The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed that four people — a mother and her three children — died in a fire outbreak in Okochiri community, Okrika Local Government Area of the state.
The police figure clarifies an earlier account from a local security official who reported that five people — a mother and four children — had died in the incident.
The fire occurred in the early hours of Friday, but its cause has not yet been established. Local youths reportedly helped extinguish the blaze before security personnel arrived.
Commander of the Civilian Joint Task Force in Okrika, Igwe Godswill, said details were still unclear when his team visited the scene and initially put the death toll at five.
However, Rivers State Police spokesperson ASP Blessing Agabe subsequently gave the official casualty figure as four.
According to Agabe, the confirmed fatalities were the woman and three of her children, while other people sustained injuries. Property was also destroyed in the fire.
Police said an investigation was underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the cause of the outbreak.
Pending any further official update, the confirmed death toll stands at four.
