Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has challenged former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi to explain what became of the alleged $308 million proceeds from the sale of state-owned gas turbine power stations during his administration.

Wike raised the issue on Sunday during a town hall meeting with leaders, elders and stakeholders of Ogbakor Etche in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He questioned what Rivers people gained from the transaction and demanded greater public accountability over the proceeds.

“Amaechi sold the gas turbine power stations for $308 million. Where is the money? What did Rivers people get from it?” Wike asked.

He also called on national television stations to invite Amaechi for questioning over the transaction.

Wike referred to an earlier commission of inquiry established in Rivers State that examined the sale of state assets, including the power facilities.

Amaechi challenged proceedings connected with the commission through the courts. His legal challenge eventually reached the Supreme Court, which dismissed his appeal in 2022. The ruling did not amount to a criminal conviction over the allegations arising from the inquiry.

Beyond the power plant controversy, Wike criticised Amaechi’s record during his eight years as Rivers State governor and his subsequent tenure as Minister of Transportation.

He urged residents to assess political leaders on the basis of projects, opportunities and other benefits delivered to their communities rather than personal or political loyalty.

Wike cited developments and appointments involving people from Etche as examples of what he described as the benefits that communities should expect from political leadership.

The latest remarks are part of an escalating political exchange involving the two former Rivers governors as political alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As of the time of this report, no fresh response from Amaechi to Wike’s latest $308 million challenge had been made.
