WhatsApp Messenger is set to increase its minimum software requirement for iPhones later this year, potentially cutting off access for users of some older Apple devices.
From November 30, 2026, the messaging platform will require iPhones to run iOS 15.5 or later, up from the current minimum of iOS 15.1.
However, affected users may not need to purchase new phones. The devices can still support iOS 15.8.x, meaning installing the latest compatible software update should allow users to continue using WhatsApp.
The five iPhone models affected are:
- iPhone 6s
Owners of the iPhone 6s should check for available software updates and install the latest compatible version before the deadline. - iPhone 6s Plus
The larger version of the iPhone 6s is also affected. Users who have not installed the latest available update may lose access to WhatsApp after the new requirement takes effect. - iPhone SE (1st generation)
Apple’s first-generation iPhone SE is also on the list. Since the device supports iOS 15, users can update the software instead of immediately replacing the phone. - iPhone 7
The iPhone 7 will also be affected by the change. Users are advised to check software update settings and install the latest compatible iOS version. - iPhone 7 Plus
The iPhone 7 Plus completes the list. Like the iPhone 7, it can run a compatible version of iOS 15, so updating the software should help users retain access to WhatsApp.
Users of these devices are advised to check Settings General Software Update and install the latest version available before November 30, 2026.
