WhatsApp has outlined the Android operating system requirements for devices that can continue accessing its messaging platform, with phones running older versions potentially losing support.
The messaging platform currently supports Android devices running Android 6.0 and newer, according to the information provided by WhatsApp.
For users to complete the account verification process, their devices must also be capable of receiving SMS messages or phone calls.
Phones running Android versions older than Android 6.0 are not supported by WhatsApp.
The platform periodically ends support for older operating systems as technology and security requirements evolve.
WhatsApp has said discontinuing support for outdated operating systems enables the company to concentrate on newer platforms while maintaining the security, reliability and functionality of its application.
Users whose phones or operating systems are no longer supported will be notified by WhatsApp.
The company said affected users would also receive repeated reminders to upgrade their devices to continue using the messaging service.
WhatsApp added that its support requirements may change over time and that users should check the latest information to determine whether their devices remain compatible.
