Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has stirred fresh debate online after describing Instagram as a platform “for girls.”
Musk remarked on October 1 while responding on X to a post by Geiger Capital, which announced that it had deleted its Instagram account.
Geiger Capital described Instagram as an “inherently female app” and said it saw no benefit in maintaining an account on the platform.

Responding to the post, Musk wrote: “Instagram is for girls.”
The brief comment attracted reactions from users on X, with discussions focusing on gender stereotypes, social media habits and differences between Instagram and other platforms.
Musk had made a similar comment earlier in the year, also describing Instagram as being “for girls.” His previous remarks generated criticism from some social media users, while others interpreted them as humour rather than a serious assessment of the platform or its users.
The latest comment was made specifically in response to Geiger Capital’s decision to leave Instagram and did not include some of the additional remarks Musk made during the earlier exchange.
Musk owns X, a major competitor in the social media industry, while Instagram is owned by Meta.

He has repeatedly criticised Meta and some of its products, while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Musk have publicly disagreed on issues involving social media platforms, technology and artificial intelligence.
Musk’s latest remark has again fuelled discussion over whether social media platforms can meaningfully be associated with a particular gender and how influential technology executives characterise competing platforms.
