The Nnamdi Azikiwe University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-NAU) has commenced an indefinite strike over the alleged non-payment of the full August 2026 salaries of its members.
The union announced the action after its congress in Awka on Monday, September 7, 2026, where members resolved to withdraw their academic and administrative services under ASUU’s standing “no pay, no work” policy.
According to the union, ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) resolution empowers its branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid beyond the third day of a new month.
In a statement, the ASUU-NAU Chairman, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, said the university had yet to pay the complete August salaries as of September 7.
“Today is 7th September 202,6 and the University has not paid the complete salary for August to our members,” the union said.
The lecturers said the situation had occurred more than three times, describing the repeated delay as frustrating and unacceptable.
They said the strike was solely in response to the non-payment of the full August salary and urged the university management and Visitor to the institution, President Bola Tinubu, to intervene.
“We therefore implore university authorities, and the Visitor (President Bola Ahmed Tinubu), to urgently address the situation by ensuring the complete payment of August 2026 salary to our members and ensure that this ugly experience does not repeat itself,” the statement said.
Following the resolution, the congress directed all members of ASUU-NAU to immediately stop providing academic and administrative services.
The union said the withdrawal of services would remain in force until all members receive their outstanding August 2026 salaries in full.
