University of Benin has denied reports linking its students and staff to a shooting incident that occurred outside the institution’s Ugbowo Campus.
The clarification followed the circulation of a viral video on social media alleging that a final-year student of the university was shot shortly after completing an examination.
The video, which surfaced on Monday, was shared on X by a verified user identified as @richyking133, who claimed the incident happened at the institution’s main gate.
In response, the university management issued a statement distancing the institution from the incident and describing it as a clash connected to cult-related activities outside the campus environment.
The statement, signed by the institution’s spokesperson, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, stated that preliminary findings showed the victim was neither a student nor a staff member of the university.

“The University of Benin dissociates its staff and students from the violent clash reported outside the Ugbowo Campus. Preliminary information indicates that the incident resulted from cult-related activities outside the university and did not involve members of the university community,” the statement read.
While expressing regret over the reported fatality, the management urged students and staff to remain calm, vigilant, and focused on their academic activities.

According to reports accompanying the viral video, the victim was allegedly attacked while driving out of the school’s main gate in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle on Sunday night in the Ugbowo area.
As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the incident.
