A 500-level law student of the University of Abuja, Amra Salihu, has emerged winner of the 9th Inter-Universities Speech Contest organised by the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA).
The competition was held on July 22 in Freetown, Sierra Leone, according to a statement issued by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations at the University of Abuja, Mr Habib Yakoob.
Yakoob said Salihu represented Nigeria after emerging winner in the national selection exercise organised by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
She outperformed contestants from The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ghana to clinch the regional title.
For her outstanding performance, Salihu received a winner’s plaque, a certificate of honour and a cash prize of 1,000 US dollars.
Another 500-level law student of the university, Abah Goodness, attended the event as an observer.
According to the university, the team was coached by the Director of the Law Clinic, Dr Nasiru Mukhtar, with technical support from Mr J.R. Gogol of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.
Reacting to the achievement, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, congratulated the students and commended the Faculty of Law and the Law Clinic for their commitment to mentoring and developing future legal professionals.
“Our students from the Faculty of Law have once again made the university proud. I congratulate them on this remarkable achievement,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to strengthening its global reputation through academic excellence and the outstanding accomplishments of its students on international platforms.
