Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at 57 after a brief illness, ending a career spanning more than three decades in the Nigerian film industry.
His family announced his death in a statement published on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.
The family expressed sadness over his passing and appreciated fans, colleagues and well-wishers for their prayers and support.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the statement read.
The family also requested prayers and understanding during the mourning period. The Guild of Nigeria (AGN) confirmed the development, with its national president, Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, paying tribute to the late actor.
Although the family attributed his death to a brief illness, the specific medical condition was not disclosed.
Duru’s passing comes four months after he publicly dismissed reports suggesting that he was battling a life-threatening illness.
In June 2026, a video circulating on social media had raised concerns about his health, prompting the actor to release a statement describing the claims as false and malicious.
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru received his early education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria.
He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1996.
The actor began his professional career in 1989 with the film Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko.
He gained wider recognition for his portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed Nollywood production associated with filmmaker Amaka Igwe.

Over the years, Duru appeared in numerous productions, establishing himself as a familiar figure in Nigerian cinema.
His contributions earned him several honours, including the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
He was also recognised for his humanitarian activities and influence on young people.
Beyond his acting career, Duru was a husband and father. He married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003.
The family had previously suffered the loss of their 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.
His death marks another loss for the Nigerian entertainment industry, where he was known for his contributions to film, theatre and the development of younger talents.
Funeral arrangements had not been publicly announced at the time of this report.
