Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has defended the Federal Government’s economic reforms, saying Nigerians are “doing very well” compared with the United Kingdom, where he said petrol costs more than ₦3,000 per litre after conversion to naira.
Okpebholo spoke on Thursday at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State, where he urged Nigerians to remain patient with the reforms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The governor acknowledged that the measures had been difficult but expressed confidence that their benefits would become more evident as the economy stabilises.
“What we are seeing in Nigeria today is a reform. And that reform that is ongoing is a very difficult one,” he said.
Using an aircraft taking off as an analogy, Okpebholo said Nigeria would eventually reach what he described as a “cruising level,” when citizens would begin to experience more of the benefits of the reforms.
On petrol prices, the governor said he visited London the previous week and decided to compare the cost of fuel in Britain with prices in Nigeria.
According to him, converting the UK price into naira produced a figure exceeding ₦3,000 per litre.
“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy,” Okpebholo said.
The governor also pointed to ongoing road construction as evidence of the Federal Government’s infrastructure drive, citing the use of concrete pavement on projects across the country.
His remarks came during an event focused on intervention on the Benin-Asaba Road, a major transport link between Edo and Delta states.
Okpebholo also expressed support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, declaring that “Aso Rock is not vacant” and citing the Oba of Benin’s position that a “working President” should not be changed.
He maintained that the reforms would ultimately improve economic conditions and expressed confidence in the direction of both the Federal Government and his administration in Edo State.
