The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has clarified that 25 people were aboard its ATR 42 aircraft, designated NAF 931, which crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, on Monday, correcting earlier reports that placed the number at 32.
The Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed the figures on Saturday, explaining that official records confirmed 20 passengers and five active crew members aboard the aircraft.
According to Ejodame, two non-active crew members were included among the 20 passengers, bringing the total number of crew personnel aboard to seven.

He attributed the conflicting figures to a possible misunderstanding of aviation terminology, particularly the expression “25 souls on board, inclusive of seven crew.”
The spokesperson explained that the statement referred to 25 people altogether, rather than 25 passengers and seven additional crew members.
Ejodame also confirmed that civilians aboard the aircraft were family members of military officers travelling to the same destination.
He said the Air Force released the verified passenger information after completing search and recovery operations and consulting the affected families.
The spokesperson expressed appreciation for the condolences and support received from Nigerians following the tragedy.
He emphasised that the incident represented a significant human loss for the military and the families affected, adding that the service was providing assistance to bereaved relatives.
Ejodame confirmed that a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remained underway.
He said the Air Force would rely on the investigation’s findings before making conclusions about the cause of the accident.

The spokesperson urged journalists and members of the public to avoid speculation and respect the privacy of families affected by the tragedy.
He further assured Nigerians that the incident had not diminished the commitment of Air Force personnel to their operational responsibilities across the country.
Ejodame reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to transparency, accountability and the welfare of its personnel and their families as investigations continue.
