The United Kingdom High Commission has held talks with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the state of Nigeria’s democracy, the role of the opposition and the country’s political outlook ahead of future elections.
The meeting, held with the PDP’s Interim National Working Committee led by its National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, featured discussions on issues affecting Nigeria’s democratic process, including the challenges facing opposition parties, the party’s leadership crisis, the 2027 presidential race and preparations for the 2026 elections.
The UK delegation was led by the Commission’s Senior Political Adviser, Dr Fortune Aldred, alongside Political Adviser Stephen Asek, while the PDP delegation included National Secretary Dr Wonyengikuro Daniel, National Treasurer Dr Isa Abubakar, National Organising Secretary Theophilus Dakas Shan, National Legal Adviser Shafi Bara’u and National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong.
Addressing the delegation, Turaki stressed the importance of preserving multi-party democracy, describing a vibrant opposition as essential to democratic governance. He alleged that the APC-led Federal Government had contributed to rising political tension through actions he described as attempts to weaken opposition parties.
Responding, Dr Aldred thanked the PDP leadership for the engagement and said the issues discussed would be conveyed through the UK High Commission’s established diplomatic reporting channels. He noted that while Nigeria’s political affairs remain an internal matter, the Commission has a responsibility to monitor political developments as part of its diplomatic engagement.
The meeting is part of a series of consultations by the PDP leadership with members of the international community on developments in Nigeria’s political environment.
