The Gombe State Police Command has announced a zero-tolerance policy against traffic offences as part of a renewed effort to enforce road safety regulations across the state.
The initiative, according to the Command, is in line with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at improving road discipline, reducing traffic congestion and preventing avoidable road accidents.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Umar Ahmed Chuso, the Command expressed concern over the growing disregard for traffic rules by motorists and other road users.
The statement noted that persistent traffic violations have contributed to road congestion, obstruction of free vehicular movement, crashes and the loss of lives and property.
The police warned that anyone found violating traffic regulations, including serving security personnel, would be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
It added that vehicles involved in traffic offences would be impounded, while offenders could face prosecution where necessary.
The Command also directed all police officers and personnel participating in the enforcement exercise to conduct themselves with professionalism, discipline and respect for the law, stressing that no officer is exempt from complying with traffic regulations.
Commissioner of Police Umar Ahmed Chuso urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users to obey traffic signs, avoid reckless driving and cooperate with law enforcement officers.
He emphasised that compliance with road safety regulations is essential to protecting lives, preserving property and ensuring the free flow of traffic across the state.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to improving public safety, maintaining order on the roads and encouraging responsible driving among residents of Gombe State.
