South African authorities have arrested two Nigerian nationals in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape Province, over alleged drug-related activities, with suspected narcotics valued at about R1.5 million seized during the operation.
The suspects, identified as Kelvin Ike and Okeke Sunday, were arrested by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) following intelligence on suspected drug dealing in the Parliament Street area of Central Gqeberha.
According to SAPS, the operation was launched after officers received information about individuals allegedly involved in selling drugs in the neighbourhood.
The police said the information was acted upon, leading to the arrest of the two suspects, who were allegedly found in possession of suspected drugs.
During the operation, a police K9 unit deployed under Operation UKUBUZA detected a rented white Mercedes-Benz B200 Turbo parked in the area.
A search of the vehicle and its surroundings reportedly led to the discovery of a plastic bag containing suspected drugs near one of the vehicle’s rear tyres.
The police subsequently traced the vehicle to its owner, who confirmed that the car had been rented out.
SAPS said officers later discovered one of the suspects allegedly hiding inside the boot of the vehicle. A key to a flat was reportedly found in his possession.
The key led investigators to a residence, which was subsequently searched as part of the operation.
Police also detained another man whose identity was not disclosed after he was allegedly found with a large amount of cash that he could not satisfactorily explain. Authorities said the matter was being subjected to further investigation.
The two Nigerians were arraigned before the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court and are expected to return to court on Monday, August 31.
Another suspect arrested on an alleged drug-dealing charge is also expected to appear before the court.
The suspects remain accused persons and are presumed innocent unless found guilty by a competent court.
