Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran remains committed to finding a negotiated solution to its conflict with the United States, following renewed military exchanges between both countries that have heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Pezeshkian made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of a regional security gathering in Kyrgyzstan, stating that continued hostilities would not benefit Iran, the wider region or the international community.
“Continuing the war is in no one’s interest,” Pezeshkian said, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, while calling for dialogue and cooperation to resolve outstanding disputes.
The statement came a day after the United States and Iran resumed military actions, marking the first major escalation between the two sides since late July. The latest clashes reportedly began after US forces targeted Iranian launchers on Larak Island, with Washington saying the operation was aimed at preventing a threat involving sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran later responded with attacks on US bases in Jordan, according to Iranian media reports, while Iranian officials also reported casualties from the US strike on Larak Island.
The renewed confrontation also affected global energy markets, with oil prices rising following concerns over possible disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for international oil shipments.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated video on social media claiming to show Iran’s Kharg Island oil hub being destroyed. However, there was no evidence that such an attack occurred, and a US official said American forces had not targeted Kharg Island during the latest operations.
Iranian officials dismissed the video as false, while the head of Iran’s National Iranian Oil Company said operations at Kharg remained active.
The latest escalation comes amid stalled diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran, with both sides maintaining opposing positions over sanctions, Iran’s nuclear programme and security arrangements in the Gulf region.
Despite the renewed hostilities, Pezeshkian said Iran would continue pursuing dialogue as a means of preventing further instability and reaching an agreement.
