Goods and household items worth millions of naira have been destroyed after a fire razed six lock-up shops in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday on Oyinkansola Hameed Street, in the Monatan area of the city.
Six of the 34 shops in the affected row were reportedly gutted by the fire. No death or injury was recorded.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.
According to him, the fire service received the distress call at about 2:20 a.m. and promptly deployed firefighters to the scene.
He said the crew found six shops already affected by the blaze and immediately commenced firefighting operations.
“The firefighters immediately commenced firefighting operations and successfully brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to the remaining shops and other nearby properties,” Akinwande said.
He identified a suspected electrical power surge as the cause of the fire.
The incident caused significant damage to goods and property stored in the affected shops, with the owners left to count their losses.
The fire service advised residents and business owners to take necessary precautions against electrical faults and other potential causes of fire.
