Panic erupted at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after gunshots were fired near the venue, forcing the hurried evacuation of U.S. President Donald Trump and other top officials.
The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton hotel, where more than 2,000 journalists, government officials and guests had gathered for the high-profile event celebrating press freedom.
Witnesses said the evening was abruptly interrupted when multiple gunshots rang out, sending attendees scrambling for cover under tables as security agents rushed into action.
Secret Service operatives swiftly escorted Trump, alongside the First Lady and senior members of his administration, to safety. Authorities confirmed that the president was unharmed.
According to law enforcement officials, the suspected gunman attempted to breach a security checkpoint and opened fire, reportedly targeting security personnel. One Secret Service agent was struck but escaped serious injury due to protective gear. The suspect was quickly subdued and taken into custody at the scene.
The chaos led to the immediate suspension and eventual cancellation of the dinner, which had marked Trump’s first attendance at the event in years.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of confusion and fear as armed agents flooded the ballroom. “Get down,” security personnel reportedly shouted as guests ducked for safety amid the unfolding emergency.
In a statement later from the White House, Trump praised the swift response of law enforcement and confirmed that all key officials were safe. He also indicated that the event may be rescheduled in the coming weeks.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack, though preliminary reports suggest the suspect may have acted alone.
