Iran says it will set conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz as Qatar, Oman and Pakistan intensify diplomatic efforts to revive talks between Tehran and Washington.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said mediators had asked Tehran to outline its demands, including an end to the regional war.
Qatar’s prime minister visited Tehran on Thursday, following recent delegations from Pakistan and Oman. Qatar said discussions included a temporary shipping corridor through the strait and a joint effort to clear sea mines.
Rezaei said Iran and Oman had agreed on a possible corridor through their respective waters, but added that Tehran would require the United States to take “practical steps” before the waterway could be reopened.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has previously demanded the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports, compensation for war damages and removal of sanctions.
The developments came as US President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz was “open” and claimed US forces had cleared mines from the waterway. However, an administration source said the US blockade remained in place and that no talks with Iran were scheduled.
The strategic waterway has remained at the centre of the conflict, with disruptions sharply affecting global shipping and energy supplies.
