Democrats on the United States House Judiciary Committee have called for the appointment of an independent special counsel to investigate allegations concerning President Donald Trump’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The demand followed the release of a 53-page report on Monday, in which Democratic committee staff alleged that evidence gathered from witness accounts, Federal Bureau of Investigation records and previously released documents warranted a criminal investigation.

The report examines allegations involving 11 women, including five who accused Trump of rape or sexual assault in Epstein’s company or presence.

The allegations have not been established in court, and Trump has repeatedly denied involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities.

Representative Jamie Raskin, the committee’s ranking Democrat, said the findings raised serious questions about whether federal authorities had adequately investigated individuals potentially connected to Epstein’s crimes.

He also accused the Department of Justice of withholding relevant information and obstructing efforts to investigate possible accomplices.

The report called for an independent prosecutor to examine the allegations and determine whether any criminal offences had been committed.

Democrats further alleged that Attorney General Todd Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s personal lawyer, faced a potential conflict of interest in overseeing matters involving the president.

The White House rejected the report, describing its allegations as false and politically motivated.

White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis maintained that Trump had distanced himself from Epstein and expelled him from his Mar-a-Lago club.

The controversy comes ahead of the November congressional midterm elections, with Democrats seeking greater oversight powers over the Trump administration.

Epstein, a wealthy financier with connections to prominent political and business figures, died in a New York jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.

His longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, was subsequently convicted of offences connected to the recruitment and abuse of underage girls.

Trump and Epstein were socially acquainted for several years before their relationship ended.

Documents released under federal transparency legislation have renewed scrutiny of Epstein’s associations with influential individuals, although being named in the records does not establish criminal wrongdoing.

Democrats argued that additional witness interviews, access to complete investigative files and independent prosecutorial oversight were necessary to establish the facts.

They also urged federal authorities to cooperate with state and foreign investigators examining allegations involving Epstein’s associates.

The report represents allegations and conclusions advanced by Democratic committee staff rather than findings of a criminal court.

No criminal charges against Trump arising from the allegations outlined in the report were announced alongside its publication.
