Golf legend Tiger Woods will have his driver’s license suspended for five years after reaching a plea agreement in his impaired-driving case, allowing him to avoid jail time.
Woods, who initially pleaded not guilty to charges linked to a March vehicle crash in Florida, changed his plea during a court hearing on Wednesday. The case was reduced to lesser driving-related offences, including reckless driving and a careless driving citation.
The 15-time major champion appeared at the Martin County Courthouse, where Judge Darren Steele ordered two five-year license suspensions to run concurrently. Woods was also handed fines as part of the agreement and has 30 days to appeal the ruling.
The case originated from a March crash near Woods’ home in Jupiter Island, Florida, where his SUV was involved in a rollover accident. Authorities said the incident involved another vehicle, but no one was injured.
According to court documents, Woods told authorities he was distracted by his phone and changing the radio station before the crash. Police also reported that he refused to submit to a urine test after the incident, while a breathalyser test showed no alcohol in his system.
As part of the plea agreement, Woods avoided a jail sentence but will be prohibited from driving for five years. The judge warned that any violation of the suspension could result in further legal consequences.
Woods, 50, has remained away from competitive golf in recent years while dealing with health issues and recovery following previous injuries. He remains one of the most successful golfers in history, with 15 major championship victories and 82 PGA Tour wins.
