Nigeria’s Super Falcons sealed their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C match on Wednesday.
The defending champions delivered a dominant attacking display at the Rabat Olympic Stadium, bouncing back from a difficult start to the tournament to keep alive their quest for a record-extending 11th continental title.
Nigeria entered the decisive fixture under pressure after suffering a surprise opening defeat to tournament debutants Malawi before reviving their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia.
Against Egypt, Justine Madugu’s side produced their most convincing performance of the competition, scoring six goals to comfortably book a place in the knockout stage.
Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring in the 21st minute from the penalty spot before Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage in first-half stoppage time after being set up by Rinsola Babajide.
Egypt pulled one back moments before the break through Nadine Ghazi, who converted a penalty to leave the score at 2-1 heading into halftime.
The Super Falcons took full control after the restart.
Babajide registered her second assist of the evening when she set up Uchenna Kanu to make it 3-1 in the 57th minute. Christy Ucheibe extended the lead from the penalty spot in the 81st minute.
Ghazi grabbed her second goal for Egypt three minutes later, but Nigeria quickly restored their dominance. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted another penalty before providing the assist for Joy Omewa, who completed the rout deep into stoppage time.
The emphatic victory completed Nigeria’s impressive recovery after the opening loss to Malawi, with consecutive wins over Zambia and Egypt earning the Super Falcons six points from three matches.
Despite Nigeria’s victory, Malawi finished top of Group C after defeating Zambia 2-1 in the other group fixture. Malawi, Nigeria and Zambia all ended the group stage on six points, but Malawi claimed first place on the tiebreak criteria, while Zambia were eliminated.
Egypt finished bottom of the group without a point, having lost all three matches and conceded 15 goals.
Nigeria now head into the quarter-finals with renewed confidence as they continue their bid to successfully defend the WAFCON title.
