At least six people were killed in overnight Russian attacks on eastern and northern Ukraine, while Russia claimed it intercepted 605 Ukrainian drones across its territory and the annexed Crimean Peninsula, marking another escalation in the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian authorities said three people lost their lives in Balakliya, Kharkiv region, after Russian strikes hit residential areas. The victims were identified as two women and one man.
Emergency responders spent Thursday extinguishing fires and clearing debris from damaged homes, according to local officials.
In the northern Sumy region, three more people were killed and at least 19 others injured during separate Russian attacks. Ukrainian police said 12 of the injured were in the city of Sumy following strikes involving guided aerial bombs.
Elsewhere, two people sustained injuries in Russia’s attack on the Dnipropetrovsk region, regional authorities confirmed.
In the southern Kherson region, a drone strike targeting a van left six people wounded, according to local officials.
Russian attacks also extended to Ukraine’s Black Sea coast, where Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said a foreign-flagged cargo vessel carrying wheat was struck, killing one crew member and sparking a fire.
Ukraine’s Seaport Administration identified the vessel as the Mera Queen, sailing under the flag of Guinea-Bissau. The attack comes amid intensified Russian strikes on Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, a campaign Kyiv says is aimed at disrupting the country’s export routes.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defence announced that its air defence systems destroyed 605 Ukrainian drones overnight across Russian territory and the annexed Crimean Peninsula.
Russian officials also reported minor damage to a logistics centre owned by e-commerce company Wildberries. The facility is the latest in a series of warehouses linked to the company to be hit in recent weeks.
Kyiv has accused Wildberries of supporting Russia’s military operations by supplying dual-use goods that can serve both civilian and military purposes.
Later on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces carried out long-range strikes on two oil refineries inside Russia: the Bashneft-Novoil refinery in Bashkortostan and the Slavnet-Yanos refinery in the Yaroslavl region.
Russian authorities had not commented on the claim at the time of reporting.
