The Executive Secretary of the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, Chituru Adele, has called on laboratory technicians, scientists across primary health centres in the state to recognize their critical role in healthcare delivery, maintain the highest standards of professionalism.

Dr. Adele made the call during the opening of a two-day capacity-building workshop for laboratory personnel held in Port Harcourt from April 8 to 9, 2026. The workshop was organized by the Board – in collaboration with the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme.

Addressing participants, Adele emphasized that laboratory results form the backbone of medical diagnosis and treatment. “The results you produce are key because they inform doctors on the line of treatment to adopt and the duration of care for patients,” he said.

He cautioned that inaccuracies in laboratory findings could lead to severe consequences, including inappropriate treatments and broader public health risks.

According to him, errors at the diagnostic stage could “cascade into dangerous outcomes” for individuals and the wider community.

Also speaking at the event, the Director of Community Health Services at the Board, Joy Wihioka, reinforced the importance of laboratory professionals within the healthcare system.

She noted that clinical decisions made by doctors, other health practitioners are largely dependent on laboratory results.

Both officials urged participants to apply the knowledge gained from the training to improve service delivery across primary healthcare facilities in Rivers State.

The workshop is part of ongoing efforts by the Board to strengthen healthcare systems, enhance the quality of diagnostic services at the grassroots level.
