Manchester City have opened discussions with Liverpool over a possible move for Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo as the summer transfer window approaches its deadline.

Gakpo’s future has emerged as one of the major transfer stories ahead of the closing days of the window, with City and Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs showing interest in the 27-year-old attacker.

Sources indicate that Gakpo would prefer a move to Manchester City if he leaves Liverpool before Tuesday’s deadline. City made formal contact with Liverpool on Saturday evening regarding a potential transfer.

The possible departure comes after Liverpool reached an agreement to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola in a deal reportedly worth up to £123 million.

However, Liverpool are understood to be reluctant to allow Gakpo to leave unless they secure another attacking option. The Reds have shown interest in Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace forward Ismaïla Sarr as potential replacements.

Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and has scored 33 goals in 91 Premier League appearances. He started the current season strongly, providing an assist for Alexander Isak’s goal in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest after scoring in the previous match against Newcastle United.

Liverpool consider Gakpo a versatile and experienced Premier League attacker, but the club had indicated throughout the summer that they would consider offers if their attacking targets were completed.

A potential deal could represent a significant financial gain for Liverpool, who signed Gakpo for about £35 million, with reports suggesting a possible fee in the region of £85 million.

However, allowing him to leave could create a major squad challenge for Liverpool, especially with Hugo Ekitike sidelined until 2027 due to an Achilles injury and Alexander Isak dealing with fitness concerns.

With the arrival of Victor Munoz, the emergence of Rio Ngumoha and Barcola’s expected move from PSG, Gakpo is aware that his role at Liverpool could become more limited, increasing the possibility of a late transfer before the deadline.
