Former presidential aide and ambassador-designate, Reno Omokri, has admitted that he was wrong to describe President Bola Tinubu as a “drug lord”, saying investigations he conducted in the United States found no evidence to substantiate the allegation.
Omokri, who had previously made the allegation against Tinubu, acknowledged that his earlier position was not supported by the evidence available to him following his subsequent inquiries in the United States.
The admission marks a significant reversal of his earlier criticism of the President, particularly over claims concerning Tinubu’s alleged links to drug-related activities in the United States.
According to Omokri, his investigations did not uncover evidence establishing that Tinubu was a drug lord.
The former presidential aide said the conclusion compelled him to acknowledge that his earlier description of the President was wrong.
Omokri’s statement comes amid renewed public attention to past allegations and political controversies surrounding Tinubu’s activities in the United States.
The President has consistently denied allegations linking him to illegal drug activities, while previous legal and political disputes concerning his name and financial records in the United States have continued to feature prominently in Nigeria’s political discourse.
Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has been a vocal commentator on Nigerian politics and has previously criticised Tinubu and the administration.
