Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has emerged as the only aspirant for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential ticket after the party officially closed the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the 2027 presidential election.

The development places Obi in a strong position to become the party’s presidential flagbearer, with indications pointing towards a possible consensus candidacy ahead of the general election.

Party sources disclosed that at the close of the presidential nomination process, Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was the only individual who purchased the required forms.

The NDC, however, announced an extension for aspirants seeking other elective positions, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly tickets.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the deadline initially scheduled to end on Sunday, May 17, was extended by one week to midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

The party clarified that the extension applies only to non-presidential positions, while the process for the presidential race has officially ended.

According to the timetable released by the party, the screening of aspirants who purchased and completed their forms is scheduled to begin on May 19 and conclude on May 26.

The collection and submission of nomination forms for candidates who successfully pass the screening stage will also run within the same period.

NDC leadership cautioned that no additional extension would be granted and urged aspirants to comply with the party’s guidelines and established timelines strictly.

The party directed aspirants to attend screening and pre-qualification interviews, accompanied by relevant documents, including educational qualifications, birth records, voter identification cards, party membership details, passport photographs, and curriculum vitae.

Party officials also stated that the screening process would consider factors such as competence, public acceptability, character and local political realities.

In addition, the NDC reaffirmed its commitment to affirmative action policies designed to encourage participation by women, young people and persons living with disabilities.

Obi, who recently joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is now widely expected to secure the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 polls.
