The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 17 officers following a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The officers were reportedly undergoing specialised operational training when the attackers launched a coordinated assault on the facility in the early hours of May 8.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the attackers struck from multiple directions at about 1:15 a.m., overwhelming parts of the training institution during the operation.

According to the statement, the officers lost their lives while participating in advanced tactical and operational training programmes designed to strengthen national security efforts.

The Police also confirmed that several military personnel were killed during attempts to repel the attackers.

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, described the slain officers as gallant personnel who demonstrated courage and commitment in service to the nation through their participation in specialised counter-terrorism training.

He said the officers made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and assured that their contributions would not be forgotten.

The IGP also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged the Force’s support for those affected by the tragedy.

As part of efforts to show solidarity, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the training facility on behalf of the Inspector-General to sympathise with military authorities and surviving trainees.

He also encouraged the surviving officers to remain resilient and complete their training in honour of their fallen colleagues.

The Police reiterated that security agencies, in collaboration with the Armed Forces, were continuing efforts to track down those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.
