The Nigeria Customs Service, Port Harcourt Area I Command, has commissioned a newly renovated canteen as part of efforts to improve the welfare and working conditions of its officers and men.
The facility, located at the Command Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was commissioned on Thursday, August 13, 2026, and formally handed over to Messrs Angies Perception Catering and Events for professional management.
The concession followed a selection process approved by the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Acting Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs and Zonal Coordinator, Zone ‘C’, Pascal Chibuoke; senior Customs officers; representatives of sister security agencies; freight forwarding associations; other stakeholders and members of the media.
Speaking at the event, the Customs Area Controller, Port Harcourt Area I Command, Comptroller Salamatu Atuluku, said the concession was preceded by a rigorous selection process conducted by a six-member committee.
She explained that the committee was tasked with advertising the project, assessing applications and recommending the most qualified operator.
According to her, the successful firm emerged after practical cooking demonstrations and oral interviews conducted as part of the selection process.
“The entire process was conducted transparently to ensure that the Command engaged a competent operator capable of delivering quality services to our personnel,” Atuluku said.
The Customs Area Controller commended members of the selection committee for their professionalism and commitment throughout the exercise.
She also appreciated the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Service’s management team for their continued efforts to improve infrastructure and enhance officers’ welfare across its commands.
In his remarks, Chibuoke described the project as another demonstration of the Customs Service’s commitment to investing in the welfare of its workforce.
He stressed that improved working conditions were critical to effective service delivery and urged officers to take ownership of the facility by ensuring its proper maintenance.
The zonal coordinator expressed confidence that the upgraded canteen would provide a more conducive environment for meals and relaxation while contributing to improved productivity among personnel.
