The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a suspected serial killer, identified as Akaniyene Eretus, following the discovery of multiple shallow graves containing human remains in a forested community in Odukpani Local Government Area of the state.
Police spokesperson, SP Sunday Akata, confirmed the arrest on Saturday, stating that the suspect was apprehended at a remote hideout in Creek Town Forest after intelligence linked him to a series of disappearances and murders in the area.

According to the command, Eretus, an indigene of Obot Akara, was traced to an isolated hut allegedly constructed within the Abanyama area of Ukim Ita Community. He was reportedly arrested during a joint operation involving the Nigerian Army, police tactical units, community youths, and local leaders.
Security operatives said the suspect attempted to flee upon sighting the team but was quickly overpowered before escaping into the surrounding forest.
A search of the hideout led to the shocking discovery of about eight shallow graves, some of which reportedly contained multiple decomposing bodies. Investigators also noted that parts of the burial site had been concealed with planted crops, allegedly to avoid detection.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to involvement in several killings and led investigators to the burial locations where human remains were exhumed.
The police further confirmed the arrest of a second suspect, a 35-year-old woman identified as Uduak Essien, in connection with the case.

Akata said both suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue to determine the full extent of the alleged crimes and identify additional victims or possible accomplices.
He assured residents that the command remains committed to a thorough investigation and the prosecution of all those found culpable.
