Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a 63-year-old man, Asuquo Etim, over alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking in the state.

The suspect was apprehended during an intelligence-led stop-and-search operation conducted on Wednesday following reports that illicit substances were being transported from Atabong Park to Esit Eket.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed that the suspect, who hails from Etebi Village in Esit Eket Local Government Area, was intercepted at about 9:30 a.m.

According to the police, a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of two large bags containing substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the exhibits were allegedly handed over to the suspect by a serving soldier for onward delivery and sale at Ibaka in Mbo Local Government Area.

The Command said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other persons linked to the alleged drug trafficking network.

Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and warned individuals involved in drug trafficking and related crimes to desist or face prosecution.

He also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible information to aid the fight against crime across the state.
