The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has condemned the conduct of a police officer, ASP Newton Isokpehi, captured in a viral video allegedly threatening members of the public for filming police activities.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the police described the officer’s remarks and behaviour as “unacceptable, unprofessional, and inconsistent” with the ethics and standards of the Force.
According to the statement, the conduct of the officer runs contrary to ongoing police reform initiatives aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and citizen-focused policing.
The Force reiterated that Nigerians have the right to lawfully record police officers while carrying out their duties, provided such recordings do not obstruct operations or compromise public safety.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has consistently maintained that members of the public have the right to lawfully record police officers carrying out their duties,” the statement said.
The police disclosed that ASP Isokpehi has been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters, where disciplinary procedures against him have commenced.
The NPF stressed that it would not tolerate threats, intimidation, abuse of office or any conduct capable of eroding public trust in law enforcement institutions.
The Force also reaffirmed that recording police activities remains a legitimate tool for public accountability and transparency and should not attract harassment or intimidation from police personnel.

It added that the outcome of the disciplinary process against the officer would be made public in due course.
The police further appreciated members of the public for their continued support and engagement in promoting accountability and professionalism within the Force.
