Former Manchester United striker, Michael Owen has advised manager Michael Carrick to consider a move for West Ham United midfielder, Mateus Fernandes as a replacement for Casemiro following the Brazilian’s departure from Old Trafford.

Casemiro left Manchester United at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, bringing an end to his stint with the club and leaving a significant gap in the midfield department.

Assessing potential replacements, Owen identified Fernandes as a player capable of filling the void, describing the Portuguese midfielder as an excellent fit for the Red Devils.

Fernandes, who joined West Ham United from Southampton last summer, has attracted interest with his performances and has recently been linked with a possible move to Manchester United.

Speaking on the challenge of replacing Casemiro, Owen acknowledged the impact the former Real Madrid star made during his time at the club, particularly after a strong finish to the most recent season.

According to the former England international, Casemiro’s departure leaves behind considerable expectations, but he believes Fernandes possesses the qualities needed to strengthen United’s midfield.

Owen stated that if he were in Carrick’s position, securing the services of Fernandes would be a priority, arguing that the West Ham midfielder offers exactly the type of attributes Manchester United require as they reshape their squad for the future.
