Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced the establishment of an Ebola isolation centre in Umuahia as part of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease, assuring residents that no confirmed case has been recorded in the state.

Otti disclosed this on Friday, October 30, during his monthly media briefing, explaining that the recently renovated Mother and Child Hospital in Umuahia had been designated for isolation purposes.

The governor said the facility would remain unavailable for regular public use while being reserved for emergency response should a suspected or confirmed case arise.

He explained that the state had activated relevant public health protocols and strengthened preparedness following Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case in Abuja.

Otti urged residents to observe recommended preventive measures without panic, stressing that the government remained vigilant and prepared to respond to any potential outbreak.

The governor also provided updates on healthcare development, particularly the activities of the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau.

According to him, approximately 31,000 residents have undergone eye screening, while 1,811 patients have received surgical treatment, including 304 free cataract procedures.

He disclosed that the state currently operates 25 eye centres across its 17 local government areas, with approval granted for four additional facilities to expand access to specialist eye care.

Otti explained that the initiative was designed to improve early diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions while reducing preventable blindness.

On transportation, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s preference for electric vehicles over Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses for public transportation.

He clarified that the decision did not represent opposition to CNG technology, noting that private companies had expressed interest in establishing refuelling facilities within the state.

According to him, discussions had progressed with prospective investors interested in developing CNG infrastructure for private and commercial vehicle users.

Otti maintained that electric buses remained the government’s preferred option for public transport because of their operational advantages and alignment with the state’s long-term transportation strategy.

The governor also indicated that his administration remained open to private-sector investment in alternative energy transportation.

The briefing formed part of his administration’s regular engagement with residents on healthcare, infrastructure, transportation and public service delivery.
