The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, has called on whistleblowers worldwide to provide actionable intelligence on Nigerian assets allegedly stashed abroad as proceeds of corruption.
Olukoyede made the call while delivering a lecture at the 43rd International Symposium on Economic Crime in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
He said the EFCC was prepared to reward individuals who provide credible information leading to the recovery of stolen Nigerian assets, offering between 2.5 and five per cent of the recovered assets as incentives.
The EFCC chairman urged participants with information on the location of monetary or non-monetary assets allegedly taken out of Nigeria to come forward, stressing that such intelligence could assist ongoing asset recovery efforts.
Olukoyede disclosed that the EFCC had recovered and secured the forfeiture of cash and assets worth more than 500 million dollars to the Nigerian government within his first three years in office.
He attributed the recoveries to the professionalism of EFCC investigators, judicial support and access to credible intelligence.
The anti-graft agency’s boss also highlighted Nigeria’s non-conviction-based asset forfeiture framework, which he said allows authorities to seek forfeiture of assets suspected to be proceeds of crime without waiting for a criminal conviction.
He cited the recovery of 752 housing units linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele, and the forfeiture of 48 of 57 properties traced to former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, as examples.
The Cambridge symposium brings together anti-corruption and economic crime experts from around the world to examine strategies for tackling financial and economic crimes.
