Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has received Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at his residence in Port Harcourt as efforts to strengthen political reconciliation between the two former allies continue.
The meeting was the first known encounter between Wike and Fubara since the governor announced that he would not contest the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.
Wike was accompanied by the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Chinda, and Chairman of the Rainbow Coalition Reconciliation Committee, Magnus Abe.
Fubara attended the meeting alongside former APC Deputy National Chairman, Sam Jaja.
The engagement is part of ongoing moves to resolve the political differences that had affected relations between Wike and Fubara and created a prolonged political crisis in Rivers State.
Wike had recently announced that his disagreement with Fubara had ended, stating that the governor had agreed to reconnect with the political structure that supported his emergence as governor in 2023.
The dispute between both leaders began shortly after Fubara assumed office and later intensified, leading to political tensions, including impeachment proceedings initiated by lawmakers loyal to Wike.
The crisis also contributed to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State.
Following subsequent negotiations, both sides reached an agreement, with Fubara joining the All Progressives Congress and aligning with the Wike-backed Rainbow Coalition.
After declaring an end to the political dispute, Wike supported the establishment of a reconciliation committee led by Magnus Abe to engage with Fubara and other stakeholders.
Fubara has since expressed support for the Rainbow Coalition and backed Kingsley Chinda as his preferred candidate to succeed him in the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.
