The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill establishing conditions for the safe termination of pregnancy in the state and separately converted the 2021 impeachment of former Deputy Speaker Dare Kadiri to a voluntary resignation.
The Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026, otherwise known as H.B. No. 036/OG/2026, was passed during Thursday’s plenary presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The legislation provides a legal framework for the termination of pregnancy under specified circumstances, with provisions aimed at reducing maternal morbidity and mortality and promoting safe motherhood and reproductive health.
Its passage followed the presentation of a report by the House Committee on Health, chaired by Wahab Haruna. The report was adopted after a motion moved by Haruna and seconded by the Chief Whip, Omobola Bakare.
Lawmakers subsequently considered the bill clause by clause at the Committee of the Whole before approving it for third reading.
The third reading was moved by Babatunde Tella and seconded by Lukman Adeleye before receiving the support of lawmakers through a voice vote.
Following its passage, Elemide directed the Clerk and Head of Legislative Service, Sakiru Adabakin, to transmit a clean copy of the bill to Governor Dapo Abiodun for assent.
Meanwhile, four other bills passed first reading during the sitting. They include the Gender Balance in Political and Public Offices Bill, 2026; Group Liability for Offences of Violence, Extortion and Secret Societies Bill, 2026; Victims’ Rights Bill, 2026; and the Ogun State Human Sacrifice Prevention and Prohibition Bill, 2026.
In a separate resolution, the Assembly converted the 2021 impeachment of former Deputy Speaker Dare Kadiri to a voluntary resignation.
Kadiri, who represented Ijebu North II Constituency in the ninth Assembly, was removed as deputy speaker in March 2021 following allegations of gross misconduct.
His removal was announced by then Speaker Olakunle Oluomo after an ad hoc committee constituted to investigate the allegations found him culpable.
Kadiri subsequently appealed to the current Assembly to have his impeachment and removal converted to a voluntary resignation.
Presenting the report of the Committee of the Whole House, Bakare said the committee considered the former lawmaker’s request at its meeting on August 18, 2026.
The committee clarified that the request was not intended to reopen the circumstances surrounding Kadiri’s impeachment, determine his innocence or apportion blame.
Rather, it said the former deputy speaker sought to bring that chapter of his public service to what it described as a “peaceful and dignified conclusion.”
Bakare subsequently moved for the adoption of the committee’s report, which was seconded by Bisi Oyedele and approved by lawmakers through a voice vote.
