The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has clarified the circumstances surrounding the proposed lecture by former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, at the institution.
In a statement, the university explained that a student group had extended an invitation to Mr Obi to deliver a lecture on campus, but said the university authorities were not properly informed of the development until Friday, just a day before the scheduled event.

According to the institution, events involving high-profile personalities require adequate prior notification to enable proper planning, including logistical arrangements and engagement with security agencies such as the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS).
It noted that such arrangements are necessary to ensure the safety of guests, students, staff, and other members of the public.
The university said that due to the short notice and inability to conclude these critical arrangements, approval for the use of Oduduwa Hall for the programme could not be granted.
The management stressed that the decision was taken in the interest of safety, orderliness, and adherence to established protocols governing the use of university facilities, and should not be interpreted as a lack of respect for Mr Obi.
It further described Mr Obi as a distinguished personality whom the university holds in high esteem.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting intellectual engagements and hosting notable personalities, provided due process and adequate notice are observed.
The university also urged members of its community and the public to comply with established procedures in organising events on campus, noting that such compliance is essential for effective coordination and overall safety.
