The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has passed a vote of confidence in its National President, Alhassan Yahya, following its meeting in Abuja.
This was contained in a communiqué signed by NUJ National Secretary, Achike Chude.
The NEC commended the union leadership for improvements in members’ welfare and training programmes, as well as the successful hosting of its meeting without external funding.
Council called on the Federal Government to urgently address insecurity, improve funding and infrastructure for state-owned media organisations, and resolve the country’s worsening power supply situation.
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the NEC urged politicians to adhere to electoral rules while charging journalists to maintain professionalism and ethical reporting.

The Council also approved disciplinary actions, including the suspension of seven members of the Ogun State Council for taking internal disputes to court without exhausting union mechanisms, and the reinstatement of the Delta State Council Secretary.
It further directed all state councils to conduct financial audits from 2022 to 2026 and submit reports to the Registrar of Trade Unions, while also approving plans for a national health insurance scheme for journalists.

NEC also passed a vote of confidence in the Department of State Services (DSS) for improved relations with the media and urged other security agencies to strengthen press freedom cooperation.
