The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) has achieved a major milestone in the country’s gas infrastructure drive with the successful completion of the River Niger crossing on the Obiafu–Obrikom–Oben (OB3) Gas Pipeline.
The Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, congratulated the company on the development, describing it as a “pivotal advancement” in Nigeria’s efforts to expand and modernise its gas transportation network.
The River Niger crossing executed using advanced horizontal directional drilling technology marks one of the most technically challenging segments of the OB3 project. According to the Minister, the achievement effectively unlocks the full capacity of the strategic pipeline, which is designed to transport up to 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day.
He noted that the development is expected to significantly enhance gas supply reliability, strengthen electricity generation capacity, and stimulate industrial expansion across the country.

Ekpo further described the milestone as a key contribution to the Federal Government’s “Decade of Gas” programme, as well as the broader “Gas to Prosperity: Renewed Hope Agenda,” aimed at deepening domestic gas utilisation and improving interconnectivity within Nigeria’s gas infrastructure network.
The Minister commended the leadership and workforce of NNPC Limited, alongside its subsidiary, the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), project contractors, and host communities for their collaboration and resilience in delivering the project.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to partnering with industry stakeholders to accelerate gas infrastructure development and fully harness Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves for sustainable economic growth and energy security.
