North Korea has fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, South Korea’s military said on Saturday, a day after Seoul concluded joint maritime exercises with the United States and Japan.
The missiles were launched from the Wonsan area towards the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, at about 5:20am local time, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The military said the missiles travelled about 250 kilometres before falling into the sea. South Korean and US intelligence agencies monitored the launch and shared information with Japan.
The latest launch comes amid renewed tensions over joint military exercises involving South Korea, the United States and Japan. Pyongyang has repeatedly condemned such drills, describing them as preparations for an invasion.
North Korea also conducted a missile launch in August despite US President Donald Trump’s stated interest in reviving dialogue with leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump has said he hopes to meet Kim again this year, having held three summits with the North Korean leader during his first presidency. The meetings, however, failed to produce a lasting agreement on denuclearisation.

South Korea’s intelligence agency recently told lawmakers that another Trump-Kim summit could take place, citing signs of possible renewed engagement between Washington and Pyongyang.
Despite the prospect of diplomacy, North Korea’s latest missile launch highlights the continuing military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
