The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), through its Maiduguri Zonal Directorate, has reportedly arraigned Bello Muhammad Kaloma, also known as Muhammad Auwal, before the Federal High Court in Bauchi State over an alleged ₦6.16 million tractor procurement fraud.

According to a statement attributed to the anti-graft agency, Kaloma appeared before Justice Aminu Garba on a four-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and money laundering.

The prosecution alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained money from MB Modi Logistics Nigeria Limited, a company belonging to Musa Umar Ibrahim, under the pretence of facilitating the purchase of an auctioned tractor.

One of the charges alleged that on April 23, 2025, Kaloma obtained ₦5.7 million through an electronic transfer into his personal First City Monument Bank (FCMB) account.

The EFCC claimed that the defendant falsely represented that the money was required to purchase a tractor supposedly being auctioned by the Executive Chairman of Ganjuwa Local Government Area in Bauchi State.

The commission maintained that the alleged transaction contravened Section 1(1)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and was punishable under Section 1(3) of the same legislation.

According to the prosecution, the complainant transferred money in two instalments towards the proposed tractor purchase, but the equipment was neither delivered nor was the payment refunded.

When the charges were read to him, Kaloma pleaded not guilty to all four counts.

Following his plea, prosecution counsel M. T. Iko requested a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.

Justice Garba subsequently ordered his remand in a correctional centre and adjourned the case until October 30, 2026, for trial.

The defendant remains presumed innocent unless and until the allegations against him are established beyond reasonable doubt by a competent court.
